For teachers and students who are interested to expand their yoga wall skills.
The History and Purpose of the Great Yoga Wall™
Gravity and the Human Body
From the beginning of yoga practice, it has been understood that the human body is constantly affected by the force of gravity. Over time, this gravitational pressure can compress the spine, restrict the joints, and stress the nervous system. The result is often discomfort, reduced mobility, and accelerated aging.
One of yoga’s traditional responses to these effects is traction—the act of gently creating space in the body. Traction helps to lengthen the spine, decompress the joints, and support better alignment and freedom of movement.

The Origins of Wall-Based Practice
In traditional practice, ancient yogis used whatever was available—vines, tree limbs, ropes, and ceiling beams—to apply traction and deepen their postures. This approach allowed practitioners to stay longer in poses, experience support, and explore alignment in new ways.
In the late 1960s and early 70s, B. K. S. Iyengar pioneered the use of rope walls in a studio setting. By anchoring ropes to the wall, he created a system that supported students in inversions, backbends, and restoratives—while also reinforcing precision and alignment.
The Birth of the Great Yoga Wall ™
In the 1980s, Kedric Wolfe, along with yoga teachers Aadil Palkhivala and Bryan Legere, expanded on Iyengar’s innovation by developing the Great Yoga Wall™. This modern system featured wall-mounted plates with adjustable straps and slings, allowing for a broader range of applications and more dynamic support.
The Great Yoga Wall™ made traction-based practice more versatile and accessible, becoming a valuable tool in yoga studios, therapy settings, and home practices alike.
